Thursday evening sessions

Our first season started in March 2010, we met several times each week to the end of May. Our most popular sessions were the Thursday night meetings with both national and secondary level school students.

Thursday's were broken down into two sessions were we would explore basic electronics, discover the world of variable resistors and light emitting diodes. By working together experimenting and trouble-shooting technology is demystified.

So far, asides from having lots of fun and building simple circuits to illustrate the various principals behind the science we have to date built Using found / recycled materials... smiley

  • Remote cars built (almost) entirely from recycled CD ROM drives, we scavanged some of the wheels from old printers.
  • Electro magnetic propulsion device using a bic biro, and capacitors from old flash cameras charged by AA batteries.
  • Water bottle rockets We manafactured a device useing an old bicycle tube valve, PVC piping, cabel ties and electrical tape to pump air with a foot pump into plastic drinks bottles which were lauched on tour in wide open spaces.
  • vibro-bots of varied shapes size and color.
  • Desk top power supplies for testing the circuits, built entirely from old computer power packs.
  • Re-enforcing the "Don't eat the electronics" rule with some our younger members we found an exception to the rule by covering edible candy  (strawberry laces) in Varak (a pure and edible form of silver).  We were able to conduct enough electricity through the circuit to light a led , using a variable resistor with a nine volt battery . Upon disassembly the circuitry was then eaten a little too eagerly by some of the members!

#1 Thursday sessions 2011

Submitted by maryroze on Sat, 01/22/2011 - 23:30.

Well after all the drama and excitement of the making of "The Knitting Club saves Christmas" we all needed a much earned break to co-inside with the bad weather, The good news is that classes will begin again soon with hopefully two evenings a week one being more art based and the other more technical. There has also been some discussion of putting together some experimental photography classes so for any body interested drop us a line at the usual address (info at theknitingclub  dot net) and we will add you to our email list so you know the when , where and what to bring!

#2 Junior Members Sessions Autumn 2010

Submitted by maryroze on Sat, 09/18/2010 - 21:10.

So September is here already and The Knitting Club's Thursday evening sessions are back. We have twelve junior members attending this session and so far we have been busy putting together simple circuits and figuring out the schematics. Much to or amazement we have a full house without any advertising at all. This however has led to some disappointment for others who would have liked to partake. The good news is that this class will be run again so register your interest now or risk further disappointment!
